Papercraft Challenge #35: ‘To Give as a Gift (Not just a card)’ – (November)

A new month means a new challenge from Papercraft Challenges!

The theme for the month of November is ‘To Give as a Gift (Not just a card).

For this month’s challenge the first thing that popped into my head was ‘Christmas Ornament’.


Why? A friend of mine had a baby in August ad this will be his first Christmas. I know growing up, and even now as an adult I make or purchase a new ornament for major life occasions. So I thought it would be super cute to make one for her son this year. Start a tradition perhaps.

I started off with Concord and 9th’s Holly Berry Turnabout Stamp Set. Now I love turnabout stamps from Concord and 9th, but I don’t always do them correctly. There’s a method….Place the turnabout jig in your stamping tool (I have my MISTI). Then place your alignment grid to line the ‘X’ up to the jig.

Lay your turnabout stamp lining up the image on the stamp with the alignment grid. Close your stamping tool cover so the stamp adheres to the cover, then remove your alignment grid. Place your card panel on top of the jig – there are corner markers to help align the panel… And you’re ready to begin!

I opted to use all one colour for my leaves, but you could choose to have 1-4 colours (or even more) using one colour per run of your jig. I used Altenew’s Crisp Dye Ink in Just Green. So I started with my jig at position 1 – the jig is numbered in the top right hand corner. After you ink up your stamp and stamp it down on your panel, you rotate your jig (which has your panel attached) to the next number (position 2,then 3,then 4).

Once the leaves are completed, I moved on to the berries. Same concept. Align the Jig with the acetate layout of the berries.

Then algin the stamp with the acetate layout sheet and begin. You’re going to do the same as the leaves, rotating after each stamp. 

Stamp, rotate, stamp, rotate…

Again I opted to stamp all 4 turns to fill the page, and I love the way it came out!

Now on to the card base. I started with an A2 sized card base of Neenah Solar White cardstock. I took the “Christmas Wishes” stamp from Kaisercraft’s Christmas Wishes stamp set and stamped it right along the top using Tsukineko’s Versafine Onyx Black Ink.

I cut down my layered holly panel to fit just below the sentiment, then used Fiskars X-Large circle punch to punch out the center of the panel and used liquid glue to adhere it to the card base.

Then I stamped “May all your Christmas Wishes come true” from Kaisercraft’s Wonderland stamp set in the center of the punch out. I also added two strips of Love from Lizi’s gold straight peel offs (Love these!) on the top and the bottom edge of the holly panel to add a bit of bling and detail to the card.

Now on to the ornament. I used the Fiskars punch to punch out a circle from a sheet of green glitter paper from DCWV Glitter Cardstock. I then used a circle die that was a few sizes smaller than the punched circle to allow me to get a frame for my shaker ornament. 

I punched a piece of Judikins embossable acetate using Fiskars X-Large punch, then lined up the name “ISAAC” using letters from The Ink Road’s 

I prepped my acetate circle using an anti static powder bag, then I used my Simon Says Stamp acrylic block and Versamark ink to stamp the name on the acetate. I heat embossed the name using Brutus Monroe’s Gilded embossing powder. I made sure my WOW Dual heat tool as nice and hot before placing it on the acetate and because the acetate warps easily I made sure that I kept it moving to help avoid too much warping.

I took the green glitter frame I previously cut out and glued it to the front of the acetate so now there’s a frame around the front. I also used some 3M foam tape, doubled it up and cut it in half to cover the edges of the shaker ornament. I doubled it up to allow for enough room for the shaker bits to move freely inside once closed. 

I filled the shaker with some of Studio Katia’s Diamond Sparkle Stars, Studio Katia’s Majestic 3mm jewels, and Little Things From Lucy’s Cards Vellum Sequin Mix.

Then I took a piece of Celebrate It Iridescent ribbon and tied a loop for the ornament.

I tucked the knotted ribbon just on the inside of the shaker then I used the circle I had punched out of the Holly patterned paper and placed it on the back of the shaker. Shaker ornament complete! 🙂

I added a bit of removable tape runner to the back of the ornament so it’s easily removable from the card and tucked the ornament into the punched circle on the front of the card.

To make a coordinating envelope I added some Christmas themed Washi Tape to the back flap as well as the bottom from of a 5×7 envelope. Since the shaker adds bulk to the card, it wouldn’t fit properly into an A2 sized envelope…so I opted to go up a size.

I clipped the edges off the washi tape….and I’m all done!
