Welcome Baby – Squirrel Style!

A friend of mine wanted a ‘Welcome Baby’ card to give to someone, but his request was that it feature a Squirrel. Yes…a squirrel. Well….I accepted that challenge!

I started with Pinkfresh’s ‘Squirrel Friends‘ stamp set…which isn’t specifically for babies, but it’s got a couple of really cute Squirrels in there 🙂

I started off stamping a parent squirrel and a baby squirrel, slightly above the bottom of the panel and closer to the left side as I was planning to put the sentiment on the upper right side. I used Gina K Designs Jet Black Amalgam Ink as it’s watercolor and alcohol marker safe and I wanted to make sure the outlines didn’t smudge as I applied water.

I started off with the parent squirrel and added a mix of brown and grey, then blended it out with some water.

I repeated the same with the baby squirrel as well. Then I mixed a green and blue and used a larger brush to “wash” the colour across the base on the panel to create a ground for the squirrels.

I added a rattle to the baby squirrel’s hand from Mama Elephant’s ‘New Family’ stamp set to add a little more ‘baby’ theme in there. Then I used a sentiment from that same stamp set and head embossed it in the upper right side of the panel using Brutus Monroe’s Gilded Embossing Powder and Tsukineko’s Versamark Ink.

To finish off the watercolor panel, I added some “sky” using a blue coloured wash across the top portion of the panel…then for a little kick…I added a bit of a sun in the upper left corner of the panel. Then I let everything dry for a bit to make sure that there was enough firmness in the panel before proceeding.

To add a bit of definition to the ground I stamped a grass detail using Frayed Leaf ink. I also painted the baby’s rattle. I then trimmed the panel down to approximately 3.75x 5 inches and adhered it to a panel of Recollections’ Iridescent white Cardstock measuring approximately 4×5.25 inches. I added everything to an A2 sized panel of Neenah Solar White cardstock and the card is complete!

I also stamped the envelope to make sure it corresponded with the card. I stamped the flap with a detailed stamp from the Mama Elephant stamp set and Frayed Leaf ink. Then I used some of the little baby objects and stamped the bottom left corner of the front of the envelope using Crimson, Snapdragon, Warm Sunshine and Frayed Leaf.

And I’m done. Is it my best work? probably not, but I pushed myself to try something outside of my wheelhouse, and I do think it came out really cute.
